Chung Young-Hwan Corean, b. 1970

  • Biography

Born in Seoul in 1970, Chung Young-hwan is a contemporary Korean artist best known for lush renderings of forests and trees known as “bluescape.” His figurative and sensuous depiction of nature offers an escape from the chaos of everyday life, helping viewers rest and unwind. In his recent projects, “the forest painter” expands beyond his signature white and blue palette to incorporate both vivid colors and muted or subdued tones in colorful variations of bluescape. The artist’s latest solo exhibition was held at Platinum Gallery in Seoul in 2023. For his twentieth one-person show, Chung revisited the concept of bluescape which has become an inseparable part of his artistic identity. Selected curated projects and group exhibitions include those at the Suwon Museum of Art in 2015, the Osan Museum of Art in 2018, Yangpyeong Art Museum and Cheongju Craft Biennale in 2019, and Mumbai Biennale in 2018. Chung is currently based in Seoul and works on a wide range of projects, including collaborations with global companies. At Seoul Mobility Show 2023, he delivered a contemporary interpretation of the four seasons of Korean forests in digital format for Hyundai Motor’s Genesis X Convertible campaign. He also participated in Somme des Parties: Récupération et Unité, an exhibition held by French beauty brand Sisley at its Paris headquarters, in partnership with the French Korean Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Gallery M9. Among other projects he is working on is a collaboration with Korea’s tech giant LG Electronics for its OLED TV campaign slated for launch in September 2024.
