Lee Ufan Korean, b. 1936
-
BiographyAs one of the founders and leading theorists of the Mono-Ha art movement appeared in Japan in 1968, Korean artist Lee Ufan takes part in a profound questioning of art, of its foundations and its very definition. Extremely simple and minimalist in style, Ufan’s process is methodically thought out. He aims to invest his thinking in half of his work while using the second half to reconcile the visible and the invisible, the exterior with the interior. In this sense, he considers “the blank space” to be the bridge between the dots, lines, or stones skillfully arranged with a steel plate and the outside world. In 2010, the Tadao Ando-designed Lee Ufan Museum opened at the Benesse Art Site on the Japanese Island of Naoshima, to celebrate the artist and his legacy. Today, his works are part of major museum collections, including Tate Britain (London), MoMa (New York), The National Museum of Modern Art (Tokyo), The National Museum of Modern Art, (Kyoto) among others.
