Latifa Echakhch Moroccan, b. 1974

Latifa Echakhch is a French-Moroccan visual artist born in 1974 in El Kbab, Morocco. Based in France, she has developed a multifaceted body of work that questions notions of identity, memory and borders. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts de Cergy, Latifa Echakhch gained recognition in the early 2000s with installations combining everyday objects, raw materials and videos. Her poetic work captures the traces left by humans and the passage of time. In 2008, her participation in the Venice Biennale marked a turning point. The artist unveiled an impressive carpet of nails on the floor, a fragile yet menacing metallic imprint. This emblematic piece raised questions about crossing borders, both physical and mental. Latifa Echakhch has pursued an international career exhibiting in major museums. Her understated, conceptual art resonates matter with spaces while evoking political and societal themes.
